How Does Ozempic®Work?
As part of your weight loss and healthy lifestyle journey, your CJA Lifestyle doctor may prescribe Ozempic, which is a once-weekly, self-injectable medicine that comes in a pre-filled pen, also known as a Skinny Jab or Skinny Pen.
Ozempic is similar in the way it works to Saxenda, but it is stronger and is administered weekly rather than daily.
Ozempic works by helping the pancreas to release the right amount of insulin when blood sugar levels are high. It suppresses your appetite to help maintain weight loss by mimicking a naturally occurring hormone (GLP-1) which makes us feel “full”. It also slows down food leaving the stomach, keeping us feeling fuller for longer.
How Do I Take Ozempic?
Ozempic is taken via a self-administered weekly injection, using a ready filled pen. It should be taken on the same day each week, with or without food.
You will be shown how to give yourself the injection, which is administered under the skin, rather than into a vein or muscle, in your abdomen, thigh or upper arm. You will be supplied with a clean, new needle to use each week and the required dosage will be discussed at your initial consultation.
Is Ozempic Safe?
Ozempic has been approved for use by both the NHS and FDA. Numerous clinical tests and trials have shown it to be a safe and effective weight-loss solution. It has been licensed for use in the UK in its current form since 2017.
You should only use the Ozempic when prescribed by a qualified doctor such as those at CJA Lifestyle, following tests to check your liver & kidney functions will support the use of the weight loss injection.
As with any drug, you may experience side effects and contraindications (it may not be suitable for all) and these will be fully explained to you by one of our CJA Lifestyle medical professionals.
Can Everyone Use Ozempic Weight Loss Injections?
Ozempic is not suitable for pregnant or breast feeding women, those with stomach problems or if you have or have had problems with your pancreas, kidneys or liver. Our qualified doctors will assess your suitability after a thorough medical consultation.
The CJA Lifestyle Plan is aimed at patients with a BMI greater than of 30 or, if you have a weight-related illness, greater than 27. Weight related illnesses include high blood pressure, type two diabetes, high cholesterol or high blood triglycerides.
We treat each person as an individual and will carry out a medical assessment before designing a bespoke plan for you.
What Are The Side Effects of Ozempic?
Your CJA Lifestyle doctor will monitor your progress while taking the Ozempic medication so it is important you let us know if you experience any side effects.
Some patients experience nausea, abdominal pain, diarrhoea, constipation and gas which is usually transient and passes within a couple of days. Our doctors will discuss all possible side effects during your initial consultation.
Will I Need to Change My Diet When Using Ozempic Weight Loss Injections?
Yes. In common with all hunger suppressing treatment options, a healthy diet and increased physical activity are essential to real and sustained weight loss. Ozempic injections can kick start your weight loss, but a caloric deficit is the key to sustaining it. You may lose calories from reducing your food intake throughout the day, through exercise or, for a greater weight loss, both.
To lose 1lb per week, it is recommended that you “lose” 3500 calories each week. This equates to 500 calories per day, whether you lose this through a reduction in calories in or through exercise, this is a good rule to follow. By following our doctor-led weight loss programme, the CJA Lifestyle Plan, we can equip you with the knowledge required to lose weight and keep it off, including the importance of wellness and good sleeping patterns too.
How Much Weight Can I Lose With Ozempic?
Everyone is individual and weight loss depends on a variety of factors including a healthy diet and staying active. We will help you to set a realistic target at your consultation.
